The Olive is a dream come true for its owners, a family from Atlanta, Georgia who have been vacationing at Edisto Beach for nearly 30 years. What began as a Thanksgiving trip to “somewhere new” became a beloved annual tradition, as the family vacationed to Edisto with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and pets. At Edisto, they became shark tooth hunters, dolphin watchers, tomato pie connoisseurs, porch wine drinkers and afternoon nappers. They were able to relax, to collect beach finds on the back porch, to read several books in one week. Every year, they were ready to return to the Spanish moss and gorgeous beaches of Edisto Island.
It had always been their dream to own a little piece of Edisto, and right before Christmas 2015, this dream was realized in The Olive. As fans of mid-century design, they appreciated the unusual architecture and layout of The Olive, which makes the most out of its small footprint and big, “hurricane-proof” design. The second they stepped inside, they knew they had finally found a permanent home on Edisto.
The house is named for a favorite shell to hunt for on the beach: the Lettered Olive, the State Shell of South Carolina. The house’s shape and interior structure (complete with a spiral staircase) resemble the olive shell — as soon as that resemblance was noted, the house had a name!
The Olive is a happy, fulfilling place for its owners. And they hope it is a wonderful place for you.
